Quick Post: Additional Grain Free or Lite Dog Food Options

The hubby and I are still researching the best option for grain free dog food for Doodle.  She’s currently eating K9 Natural brand but we are not sure if this is the best fit.  We are watching her closely but she is still having some incontinence issues.  We really liked the Beef food from The Honest Kitchen however, it was honestly a bit too expensive.  We may have to go back to it if the K9 and this other brand prove to not be options.

Someone recommended another brand on the forum.  The recommendation was actually for canned cat food but I decided to see if they also had a dog food option.  They do.  It is by Nature’s Variety and is their Instinct line.  I think we are going to try this out.  It would be nice to have something like this when we make our trip to Florida.

Why are we going to Florida?  We think we’ve found someone who might be able to help with some of my issues (abdominal swelling, pain, intestinal distress, pain…etc).  I’m allowing myself a small glimmer of hope.  More on that later.

  1. Some dogs develop incontinence after being spayed or neutered. This is more likely in females. Hopefully, that is not your doggy’s problem. Allergies can cause bladder irritation, and various foods can irritate the bladder, too. Too much coffee can do it to me, but that is not the culprit with your doggy. Good luck figuring it all out.

    • Thanks for the input, Donnie. Maggie was spayed over three (I think) years ago, she was also the mother at a puppy mill and was not given very nourishing or healthy foods. We found out about her corn allergy before ours and I just trusted the veterinarians to not give her foods/medications that contained corn. Well, I know better now. Her food, that initially helped, was FULL of corn. I think it is the allergies causes bladder irritation. You have to wean them off of their old food slowly while slowly introducing the new food so she still has corn in her diet. We’re hoping to have her completely transferred over by the end of January. She’s not nearly as lethargic as she was but the incontinence is still an issue, it’s not as bad as it was.

  2. My girl eats corn free too, but I don’t know if she is allergic to it. I am, so we just avoid all corn. You probably saw my post about the aflatoxin contamination of some corn containing dog/cat foods on the forum. Darn corn is the bane of our existance. Callie and I are both allergic to grass. Poor little girl has to walk barefoot in it.

    • I did see your article! I avoid nuts and grains because of a similar mycotoxin issue. I also think that’s why I don’t do well with using chia or flax as an egg substitute, they are also high in mycotoxins. Corn is the bane of our existence.
