Starting the New Year Off with a Bang!

My goal is to have a better year, health wise and socially.  Socially?  I miss my friends and family.  I really hate living in a bubble.  I’ve become more sensitive to chemical fumes and additional foods in the last six months and I desperately need and want the sensitivy to go away.  I realize it will probably take a while but I need some hope that it will happen.  In order to accomplish my goals, I will need help to figure out what is going on inside my body.  Unfortunately, I have no help from my MD so I decided to begin reading and wading through the many websites in internet land.  90% of the information was useless but I did find some intriguing ideas that seem to fit me, my past situation over the last 18 months and my current state of unfortunate pain.  My typical tricks to stop the swelling madness have failed me and I realize those tricks were only masking the real problem, not fixing it.

Now this may be more information than some of you might want…so I recommend that you stop reading NOW.  Seriously.  For those of you that are experiencing any of the following symptoms, I would encourage you to continue reading; maybe you will see an idea or perhaps you can share an idea with me.  My symptoms include:

  • Extreme insomnia
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Discolored patches on my skin
  • Localized, sharp pain over my right eye
  • Sharp pain in my abdomen and stomach
  • Itchy skin that refuses to go away
  • Abdominal pain and severe swelling
  • Distended stomach and abdomen
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Persistent back pain (particular between my shoulder blades and in the kidney area)
  • Loss of appetite (which is not good consider I’m still nursing the Yipiyuk)
  • Pale stool color (there it is)
  • Severe, chronic constipation (I initially put Diverticulitis here but I’ve never been tested for that…so I thought I would use a more vivid description instead)

These symptoms, minus the bottom two, are kept under control until I have an exposure to an allergen and subsequent allergic reaction; then everything hits me at once and I am almost incapacitated.  I was reading this article concerning “Allergy Effects on the Liver and Colon” and began to wonder if this was happening to me.  When I have allergic reactions, I have severe, chronic constipation.  My stomach and abdomen become distended and then the other symptoms hit with a vengeance.  I’ve been experiencing this for the past week and I am exhausted.  I do not want to spend 2012 in the same poor or semi-poor shape of 2011.  The article has this to say on the liver and colon during allergic reactions

“The allergic reaction creates turmoil in the body when antibodies and antigens react, causing mast cells to break up and histamine to be released in large quantities. These adverse chemical reactions result in the body becoming overloaded with toxins which eventually find their way to the colon for elimination. Unfortunately, the constipation, which is so often present in allergy conditions, causes these toxins to remain in the colon. This results in the bile fluids continuously overloading the liver with recirculated toxins from the colon and eventually, the liver may become incapable of coping fully with its detoxifying duties. When this happens, the liver degenerates, the system becomes poisoned and the individual, who has never been well because of masked allergies, now becomes seriously ill.

–?

The effects, therefore, of allergies, particularly several masked allergies, on the liver, over a period of time, can be extremely serious and cause further severe illness.

–/

Constipation, which often accompanies food allergies, causes the accumulation of fecal matter in the colon which proceeds to putrify and ferment. Combine this with the additional wastes caused by the body’s continuing allergic responses, and an overloaded toxic situation occurs in the colon, with devastating effects. The colon is faced with the extraction of remaining nutrients from fermenting, toxin-laden rubbish. As a result, polluted nutrients pass back into the bloodstream to aggravate further the allergy condition.”

If this is actually happening to me then I need to do something about it, now.  The article did not mention a remedy for the above situation so the search continued.  After a few additional weeks of research I came across this website (this site has an alternative approach).  It talks about the the benefits of completing a gallbladder flush.  I was a bit hesitant of attempting a gallbladder flush while I am nursing the Yipiyuk but I think it would be in my best interest and indirectly her best interest for me to be healthier.  This decision was not made lightly, it was frought with these thoughts:

“What if she reacts to my detoxing?”

“What if she has severe diarrhea and becomes dehydrated?  I can’t give her pedialyte…it’s all corn”

“What if….fill in the blank”

I’ve done additional reading on the function of the liver and complications a person can have if their liver is compacted or not functioning correctly.  Here are a list of symptoms associated with liver problems from the Mayoclinic.  You can also follow this link to see symptoms of gallstones.

“Signs and symptoms of liver problems include:

  • Discolored skin and eyes that appear yellowish
  • Abdominal pain and swelling
  • Itchy skin that doesn’t seem to go away
  • Dark urine color
  • Pale stool color
  • Bloody or tar-colored stool
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Loss of appetite”

According to the Mayoclinic Gallbladder flushes are useless.  You should instead go to your doctor to talk about removing the gallbladder, medication, bile salt tablets (why not use epsom salt?), and sound wave therapy.  Some individuals will have nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain during the flush and cleansing period…most people are already experiencing this.  I know I am.  I cannot enter my doctors office without illness and dizziness, so unfortunately sound wave therapy may not be an option for me.  I have no interest in another surgery with corny IVs, corny Intravenous medication, corny tape, latex gloves, and corny food.  I honestly cannot afford any more compounded medications, the insurance does not cover it at all.  They also mention that “the gallstones” expelled are actually bits of the olive oil.  I did some reading and individuals were able to expel gallstones without the use of the olive oil drink.  That was promising, for me at least.  I realize herbal mixtures aren’t scientific, to some, but I have had more success with herbal mixtures than I had with all of the corn laden medications my doctors gave me over the years.  Medications that I had severe allergic reactions to and was prescribed, erroneously, again and again.  My family has a history of gallstones, food allergies (even though they won’t admit to it), and diverticulitis/severe and chronic constipation.  This may seem like a risky assumption but I am going to move forward with the corn free herbs, gallbladder flush and hope for a reduction in my symptoms and a reduction in food allergy and chemical sensitivity.  I am still searching for an organic epsom salt….

So, I’m literally starting the new year off with a bang!  We are hoping to have a better handle on my allergies, the Yipiyuk’s allergies and allergic reactions.  Wish us luck!

Quick Post: Homemade Curry Powder

I used the recipe below to make my own curry powder.  I’ve been avoiding all types of pepper since February 2011, including black, cayenne, sweet, hot…etc.  I’m allergic to cinnamon and the Yipiyuk cannot have cardamom.  Needless to say, I had to find a recipe that would still taste like curry with limited ingredients.  I also have been unable to find safe turmeric (I think that’s changed…it’s just not in stock).  I made a few changes to the recipe, as you can see below.  It actually tastes and smells like curry powder.  I was surprised and excited!  All spices were purchased at Mountain Rose Herbs in their whole form.

Ingredients

  • fennel seeds – 2tbsp
  • cumin seeds – 2tbsp
  • coriander seeds – 2tbsp
  • fenugreek seeds – 0.5tbsp
  • 1 clove (I used 2)
  • 2 pieces of allspice
  • rock salt
  • garlic granules

Dry fry the mixture of spices and then grind into a powder for use in a delicious curry.

Quick Post: Grain Free Flour

I use the grain free flour recipe from Grain-Free-Gluten-Free.com for most of my baking needs.  I substitute besan/chick pea/garbanzo flour for the soy flour.  It is really very simple and the bread/muffins/cakes/etc. come out tasting very good and they are fluffy.  I mix up multiple cups worth and store it in the refrigerator in an air tight, steel container.  This helps me to cut down on preparation time for baking.

Ingredients

1 part buckwheat flour (Arrowhead Mills)

1 part besan flour (Nirav)

1/2 part arrowroot (Mountain Rose Herbs)

1/2 part coconut flour (Tropical Traditions

Quick Post: New Yarn to Try

I’ve been trying to find organic cotton yarn that has NO dye, i.e. colorgrown organic cotton yarn.  I’d begun to give up hope of finding reasonable priced CG organic cotton yarn until I found this site.  I really want to try this yarn!  I’ve ordered some material to sew a few items for the Yipiyuk from PMOrganics but I decided against ordering yarn for now (I have a LOT of new yarn in the queue).  I’ll update again when I have an opportunity to try this colorgrown organic cotton yarn!

I placed an order with Green Sheep Shop for their Organic cotton sock yarn.  For the life of me I could not find more organic cotton sock yarn on the web.  Well, there were additional sites but I didn’t want to give up a kidney for yarn.  I really want to make socks for the YIpiyuk that she can wear inside her shoes.  The booties are much too thick and the elastic in her shoes breaks her out without a layer between their layer of cotton (around the elastic).  She really needs two to three layers to block her from the latex.

Green Sheep Shop has this to say about their yarn:

“Organic, sustainable, recycled, fair-trade, and natural yarns are our focus.  Eco-safe hand dyed and undyed, colorgrown yarns in a wide spectrum of vibrant colors and gorgeous neutrals.”

Green Sheep Shop does have organic colorgrown yarn that I want to try.  Check it out here, make sure you scroll down to find the yarn.  It’s not too expensive, but it’s not cheap.  I’ll try it out in a few months.

I found this yarn on EcoButterfly’s site and I will be trying it very soon.  It is chunky, organic cotton yarn, that is hand dyed.  The dyes and vegan and veggie based, which may present issue but I’m hoping for the best.  This particular is discontinued and is a really good price.

Quick Post: Corn Free Coffee

I’ve noticed multiple people searching for corn free coffee and I wanted to quickly weigh in.  My hubby drinks Cafe Cristina, loves it and it is company confirmed and human tested corn free.  The beans do not have a layer of dextrin or any other corn derivative on them like other, more mainstream coffees (another post for another day).  It is a bit pricey but it is worth it.  I don’t drink this coffee, mind you, still nursing but I can smell it without issue.  Here’s the website.  The owner’s name is Linda and she’s a pleasure to speak with.  I follow them on Facebook and they are quick to respond to emails and wall posts.

Multiple individuals on the Avoiding Corn, Delphi Forum use Cafe Cristina.

Quick Post: Thank You Gifts For Our Farm Friends

We wanted to do something nice for the people who have played a key role in helping to provide safe food for our family.  We recently found out that they know little people (they have nieces and nephews) so I decided to make hats for the wee ones for Christmas.  I was going to make five of the exact same hat but I didn’t have enough yarn so I decided to improvise and use what I had.  It worked out really well.  I will be making duplicate hats for the Yipiyuk when she gets older, because the Yipiyuk needs these hats.  Well, maybe not…but they’re so cute!  Each hat took one evening to make.

Homemade Chocolate with Yacon Syrup

It seems we’re doing OK with the yacon syrup.  So…I’m making chocolate.  I’m not following a recipe, I’m just winging it.  It should be interesting.  I should mention here that I have noticed a full body tingling sensation (and slight itching) this go around as I breathe in the cacao fumes.  I hope that doesn’t mean anything…

Ingredients:

  1. 4 oz cacao paste
  2. 1 oz cacao butter
  3. 2 pinches of salt
  4. 1 1/2 spoonful of yacon syrup
  5. 3/4 spoonful of coconut oil

Double boiler to melt the cacao paste and butter together over medium low heat (25 minutes).  Babysit the melting cacao and add salt when completely melted.  Let sit (5 mins or so), lower heat.  Add yacon syrup.  Let sit (5 minutes or so).  Add coconut oil, let sit for another 2 minutes and take off heat.  Immediately pour into molds and put into freezer.

They turned out pretty good!  The yacon syrup did a MUCH better job than the apple syrup.  I am really excited about what this could mean for our desserts…  it could mean we can finally have desserts again!  Tee hee!  Next time I think I will try to use 3/4 cup coconut milk (homemade) and add an additional 3 spoonfuls of yacon syrup.

Sewing Projects for the Yipiyuk

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

It’s getting cold!  The Yipiyuk needs socks and I haven’t been successful with finding any that are latex free.  The hubby had a great idea for socks and I decided to take to plunge to see if it would work.  The idea was to turn the sleeves from some of her old jumpers into socks.  They are made with jersey cotton.  They aren’t organic but at least they don’t stink.  It turned out pretty well.  They fit her perfectly, and she usually leaves them on for five minutes!  Unfortunately, I cannot find the pictures of the socks.  I suppose I could take some different pictures…  We’ll see.

I also decided to make her Christmas pajamas this year; just something cute for her to toddle around in…if only she would walk.  I ordered the penguin skiing fabric from PMOrganics.  It is organic cotton with a slight stretch.  I also ordered the twill, used as her drawstring, from PMOrganics.
